Maryada..
the very own word in my mother tongue, Hindi, may sound a bit too heavy to
use.. But is it actually something of great importance???
For
all those who do not understand Hindi, Maryada means “Limit”. What is it that
defines this word?? How can a girl coming home at 9 in the evening call it her
limit, while the other one stays back at a party the entire night? Is it then implied that the one staying back has no limits or is crossing the line?? Well,
it’s a different story altogether.
For
me, the word “Limit” has two different connotations, the first one certainly
being the Limit an individual has and sadly enough, the other is the Limit set
by the society we live in. And yes, it is difficult to achieve a Harmony between
the two. For instance, I do believe that there is nothing wrong at all in a
Live-in relationship, as long as I am in love with guy and actually enjoy my
life with him, but thanks to the society, I have an unsaid obligation to be in
my limits and not even think of such a gross step.. (although our prestigious
constitution legally allows it!) Well, this puts me in the very famous Shakespearen
Dilemma, “to be or not to be”. Shall
I be myself and care a damn about the society or shall I be in my Maryada?
To
solve this one, it’s very important to understand what Maryada is. There is no significant definition of “Maryada”. It all
depends on an individual. A Limit is
something you personally set for your own self. The girl staying back at the party the entire
night is not at all crossing the line, as long as she knows her own limit and
is not crossing it. Of course it is necessary to walk according to the social
norms, but one still has a liberty and a right too, to decide the “Line” for
him/her self. The word Maryada is not
really a heavy one,if you follow your heart and do the “Right“ being in the
limits you set.
So
people, don’t suffocate yourself because of the social constraints, yet stay in
your own Maryada and do only that what
your conscious allows you to!
